Two minutes, once
Measuring your foot properly
A tape measure beats remembering what fit you three years ago. Do it once, write the number down, and every pair after this is a lookup.
01
Measure at the end of the day
Feet spread and swell as you use them. A shoe fitted to a 9am foot is a tight shoe by dinner, which is the single most common reason a size that looked right turns out wrong.
02
Put the socks on first
Measure in the socks you actually wear with sneakers. Thin no-shows and thick cotton crews are close to half a size apart once the shoe is laced.
03
Heel to the wall, weight down
Tape paper to a hard floor against a wall. Stand on it — do not sit — with your heel touching the wall. Hold the pencil straight up and mark the tip of your longest toe, which is not always the big one.
04
Do both feet, keep the longer
Almost nobody is symmetrical. Measure heel to mark in centimetres on each foot and size to the bigger number. The smaller foot can be taken up with a thicker sock.
Don’t add a thumb’s width
The advice to leave a thumb of space in front of your toes is about the finished shoe, not your foot. That room is already built into the last, so adding a centimetre to your measurement before looking it up puts you a full size too big. Measure the foot, read the chart, done. For the same reason, don’t measure an insole or the inside of an old shoe — both have already been stretched by the foot that wore them.
Model by model
The same size fits differently
A size is a length. How a shoe feels at that length depends on the last, the padding and the leather. These are the differences worth knowing across what we carry.
Air Jordan 4
True to sizeTrue to size. The midfoot is snug and the leather gives across the toe box within a week.

True to sizeTrue to size, on a narrow last. Wide feet are the one case for going up a half.

True to sizeTrue to size. Slimmer through the toe box than an Air Force 1 — a half up if you are wide.
Shop the Dunk LowAir Force 1 Low
Half downRuns about half a size large, with a wide toe box and thick leather. Most people take a half down. Wide feet should stay true to size.

True to sizeTrue to size, but the padded tongue and fatter insole eat volume. If you are between sizes or wear thick socks, take the larger.

When it’s still a coin flip
Go up, not down. A shoe half a size long can be laced tighter or taken up with an insole; a shoe half a size short can’t be fixed at all. The exception is the Air Force 1, which already runs long — there, take the smaller one.
